Week 5 (Shoutout To My Ghanaian Peeps)

You know… I had to reflect on something this week. I’m over a month into my time here in London and I’m STILL finding ways to get lost and I’m not sure if I love it anymore! I know what I said last week and I still partly believe it, but part of me is struggling to reconcile with the fact that I’m not a pro at navigation yet.

My geographical challenges aside, this was another fun week. I befriended this girl named Sasha who lives in my building, turns out she’s from California and she’s Ghanaian, so I ask her where I can get some good food and she suggests this Ghanaian shop across the street from my university. From then on, I made it my mission to have my first taste of Ghanaian food and it would prove to be the best decision I’ve made in a long time. Early in the week, I tried Waakye for the first time and it was AMAZING, some of the most intensely flavored food to ever grace my taste buds. There was so much Shito in my Waakye that when I showed one of my new Ghanaian friends Dylan, he dubbed me an honorary Ghanaian. You may now refer to me as Kweku Samson I.

My experience with Waakye sparked my curiosity, so I looked to try Fufu for the first time later on in the week. Fufu was good too! It was a lot tougher to consume, but it was incredibly filling and for that, I would love to try it again. I don’t only say that because I have made more Ghanaian friends than I could’ve anticipated, but they legitimately have something good going with their food. I am coming for their Jollof rice next!

Some other things I did: Continued meeting with my new disciple friends, watched way too many films in preparation for the Oscars, tried warm cookie dough (also delicious), got my finger caught in a door, got lost (again), and found David Bowie’s blue plaque. I’ll attach some pictures of those things below, thanks for tuning in and I’ll be back next week!

You shall be mine once more…
Definitely lived up to the hype, great comfort food!
If it weren’t so expensive, I would be having this every day…

  2. Hi Kaelen! I’m a friend of your mom’s. We met once when I visited your home for one of your mom’s gathering, but she talks about you all the time so I feel like I know you. I’m so glad you’re enjoying your trip across the “pond”. Yes, navigating a new place in a different country does come with its challenges. However, give yourself grace and enjoy the experience. These are memories that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. Looking forward to hearing more about the Ghanaian food!
